Applesauce gives this sauce a nice thick texture that coats well on meat. It has a sweet spicy flavor that is excellent on chicken or pork. It may also be canned in sterile containers for later use, or for giving as gifts.
All the work has really been done for you, since you begin with a store bought dressing, and just fancy it up. A bit of oregano, a smidgen of dried basil and minced onion. A teaspoon of sugar and you 're done.
Made ahead, a bowl of this salad would make a well-rounded lunch, or dinner for one of those too-busy-to-cook nights. The crunchiness of the broccoli, sunflower seeds and crisp crumbled bacon make the perfect foil for the mayonnaise-based dressing.
The glaze gives a wonderful sheen to the bird. A great addition to the menu is wild mushroom stuffing, cranberry sauce with raspberry vinegar, mashed sweet potatoes, rutabaga and parsnip casserole, green beans with walnuts, date and onion relish, pear chutney, and of course, pumpkin pie and butterscotch pie. If fresh sage is unavailable use 1/4 teaspoon dried sage.
